Zambia urges China to increase compensation for toxic mine spill

Zambia’s government says it may demand increased compensation from a Chinese-owned copper mine after a toxic waste spill polluted a major river. The February incident occurred when a dam at the Sino-Metals Leach Zambia mine collapsed, releasing acidic waste with heavy metals. Although the company has apologized and offered compensation, Vice-President Mutale Nalumango stressed that more may be required, emphasizing that Zambians’ safety is “non-negotiable.” Some embassies have advised their citizens to avoid the affected area due to health concerns.
